Current Set–Up and Activities of the Society
The Society Duties and Responsibilities
Soil Science Society of Iran (SSSI) started its activities in a gathering of Iranian soil scientists at College of Agriculture, University of Tehran, Karaj, Iran in 1972. The objectives of the SSSI were announced as facilitating the communications between scientists, researchers, educators, and students of soil science and related fields by arranging scientific meetings and publication of research findings. The society was registered officially in 1974 with a total of 24 members.
The First and Second meetings (Congress) were held under the sponsorship of University of Tehran in Karaj and Shiraz University in Shiraz in 1972 and 1974, respectively. The SSSI was inactive untill 1992 when the Third Congress was held and the General Assembly elected the Society’s Executive Committee. Meetings were convened, afterward according to Table 1.

Current Set – Up and Activities of the Society
The society consists of the General Assembly, Executive Committee, Secretarial Office, and Scientific Divisions; each with its own duties and responsibilities as defined by Society’s constitution and bylaws. There are four categories of membership, namely, Active, Associate, Student, and Honorary.
The Society Duties and Responsibilities
· Cooperation with universities, higher learning institutions, and research instiutes in the areas of educational programming and scientific research as well as scheduling scientific meetings.
· Critical reviewing and evaluation of educational and research programs in soil science and related fields and making recommendations for their improvements.
· Offering educational, scientific, and technical services to the legislators and government departments.
· Stimulating and encouraging researchers, as well as students of soil science in their scientific efforts.
· Preparation, compilation, and publication of scientific, educational, and research findings related to soil science.
· Organizing national and international meetings of research and educational nature related to soil science.
